Books In Order | Perry Rhodan

Abstract Perry Rhodan is the most successful science fiction book series ever published. Since its debut in 1961, the German weekly serial has produced over 3,200 novella-length issues (as of 2026) and spawned numerous spin-offs. For new and veteran readers alike, the sheer volume creates a daunting challenge: where to begin? This paper outlines the history of the series, explains its unique “cycle” structure, and provides a definitive reading order for the main series, the essential Silver Edition reprints, and the major side series. 1. Introduction Created by K. H. Scheer and Walter Ernsting, Perry Rhodan chronicles the adventures of an American astronaut who, in 1971, becomes the guardian of humanity following a mysterious encounter on the Moon. Unlike episodic space operas, Perry Rhodan operates in real-time, with characters aging and the galactic political landscape constantly shifting. Understanding the reading order is crucial to following its dense, interconnected plotlines. 2. The Structure: Cycles, Not Books The original German series is published weekly in digest-sized “booklets” ( Heftromane ). For collected editions, these are grouped into cycles —major story arcs of 50 to 100 issues. The English translations (by Ace Books and later FanPro) reorganized these into standard novels.
