The Shade recoiled. What are you doing?

She poured every sound she had ever hoarded into the fragment. Every laugh. Every cry. Every whispered promise. Every clumsy footstep in the dark. “That is not the King’s work,” Kaelo said

She sat on the edge of the broken cliff where she had buried her mentor, Nuru, three seasons ago. The old woman’s staff—a crooked limb of petrified lightning oak—lay across Mapona’s knees. It hummed with a low, mournful note.

The dust of the crater had barely settled when the silence came. That was the first sign that something was wrong.
