Fortitude opens in Ilium, New York — the same invented city Vonnegut would later use. He survived the Battle of the Bulge by lying still under a dead horse for two days. “He learned,” Vonnegut wrote, “that fortitude was just a fancy word for staying put while the world rolls over you.”
