The story takes place in the future, where Earth has become uninhabitable due to pollution and other environmental disasters. The United Nations has established a new home for humanity on a planet called Nova Terra. The film follows a father-son team, General Jake O'Donnell (Will Smith) and his son Mace (Jaden Smith), who are sent to Earth on a mission to retrieve a flight recorder.
